A happy sexual life is part of a happy life altogether. This relates also to older men. The outcomes of an epidemiologic study presented by C. Stief (D) showed that, for instance, two thirds of all men between 70 and 80 years enjoy intercourse three times a month. However, to many of these a satisfactory sex-life does not come unassisted.

Erectile dysfunction is spreading, either caused by orga nic illnesses like diabetes or prostate cancer or psychological problems. ED may also be a sentinel event for coronary heart disease, as C. Schulman (B) pointed out.

While it is agreed upon that such conditions must be treated on a highly individual basis, there are now a wide range of therapies available to tackle the problem. H. Porst (D) presented a new study on the three PDE-5-Inhibitors now available throughout Europe (Tadalfin, Sildenafil, Vardenafil) wherein all three proved effective with a quite low profile on side-effects, however, different “working modes”. Therefore, as Dr. Porst stressed, patients should be initially offered all three drugs (given that there are no contra-indications) to see which of them is the most suitable for their individual lifestyles and that of their partners.
